Promises To Keep
The James N. Patterson Education and Research Fund
Professional Education
Grants to be offered to technologists and physicians who seek specialization in Transfusion Medicine through the CAHEA certified SBB Training Program, or the Fellowship training offered to Board Eligible medical graduates. The grants made should be in sufficient amounts to cover the trainees' stipends, training materials, and support infrastructure (e.g. information systems capable of supporting Distant Learning activities, travel to scientific or educational meetings, textbooks, etc).
Projected funding needs: $136,000/year

Translational Research
FBS' Biotechnologies Department engages in the evaluation for application of newly developed technologies that improve the safety, efficacy and/or efficacy of transfusion therapies. The funding of feasibility pilot studies to measure the potential of candidates prior to committing to full scale studies is needed to secure contracts that lead to research contracts sought. Likewise, infrastructure outlays such as the acquisition of instrumentation or equipment may be required to meet the needs of studies to be conducted.
Projected funding needs: $41,500/year

Basic Research
Joint programs involving basic research are being conducted under the current Affiliation Agreement with the University of South Florida (USF). Current collaborative work includes studies of spectrophotometric analysis of blood and its components. The investigative work is performed with the USF College of Engineering. Areas of focused research for the 2002-04 biennial plan are detection of bacterial contamination in platelet components, and functional quality assessment of stored platelet components. Additionally, studies on the epidemiology and significance of Chlamydia pneumoniae infection in blood donors are being conducted in collaboration with the Department of Microbiology at the USF College of Medicine.
Projected funding needs: $27,500/year

Of the three core activities supported by the JNP Fund delineated above, only the Translational Research work is expected to generate income to offset expenses related to the activities conducted under this administrative unit. The specified funding needs are projections for the first two years of operation.

Future Funding Resources
Funding resources beyond what has accumulated in the current endowment will be needed to maintain the viability of the Fund's sponsored activities. Annual contributions of $250,000 would allow the support of planned activities and provide a minimal surplus to be added to the endowment's corpus to insure that the Fund's mission continues to be properly fulfilled. Among the possible funding sources to be considered are:
  • Donations from individuals or corporations who are actively recruited to support the Fund's mission.
  • Grants from other foundations or government agencies to fund specific research projects or educational activities of their interest.
  • Contributions from FBS vendors who could benefit from the educational and research activities supported by the JNP Fund.
  • Pursuing grants from local development agencies whose mission includes the creation of biotechnology incubators in our region.
Decisions Ahead
A most important and immediate issue for consideration is a review of the current policy on maintenance of a minimal corpus in the endowment that would go with recommendation for action by the FBS Foundation Board.

Once consensus is established as to the Core Tracks to be supported by the JNP Fund, prioritization of each project must be agreed upon, so that available resources are spent in the order established, with the realization that support of certain activities or projects would have to be postponed or dropped altogether.

A mechanism for formal review of ongoing project/activity funding and performance must be established. An Annual Report to the FBS Foundation Board should be submitted by the Grants and Awards Committee summarizing the past year's Fund expenditures, project/activities supported with Fund's resources, planned needs for the upcoming year, and an update on long term plans for the Fund.
